Why do headlights go bad?

All car headlights are made out of polycarbonate, a type of plastic that from the factory comes with a clear coat that over time will start to oxidize and create a yellowing oxidation this is due to a softer plastic that has a lot of oil in it yet some headlights are harder and do not turn yellow but become very cloudy. This oxidation is caused by not applying a protection on the headlight much like your car paint needs wax protection so also does your headlights but most don’t think to put any protection on, which then creates the yellowing or cloudy headlights which eventually will cover the headlight making it impossible to see down the road.

Is a headlight restoration worth the value?

I suggest every customer calls their local dealership and ask how much for new headlights and how much to have them installed and ask how long will I have to leave it at the dealership? You will be shocked at the price!

Why should nobody purchase aftermarket headlights online?

The easiest answer to this question is look at the warranty. Most only offer a 1 year warranty on the headlight functioning , let alone before the headlight turns yellow.

What do I do?

1st I remove the yellow oxidation and then the old clear coat through either wet or dry sanding or an oxidation remover. Both the yellow oxidation and old clear coat must be removed by sanding there is NO other way to remove both. After that the headlight must be sanded with multiple grit sandpaper in order to get rid of pitting from rocks and bring the headlight to a smooth surface. Next I apply 3 different coatings that will protect the headlights for years from any further yellowing or becoming cloudy again.

Service Area

Albany, Schenectady, Troy and Clifton Park.

I will gladly come to your place of business or residence.

What’s needed from you?

Each car takes approximately 2 hours. Outside temperature needs to be above 50 degrees for the coatings to properly cure. Vehicle should not be driven for at least 1 hours once job is complete. Headlights can not get wet for 1 hour. Need approximately 5ft of working space in front of vehicle in a safe area from traffic.

Warranty

I warranty the headlights for 2 years but most often the yellowing/cloudiness will not come back for many years.

Cost

I charge $80 per car the only exception to this is if the headlights have been restored previously with a spray named 2K Clear Coat. 2K Clear Coat spray will destroy a headlight and takes many hours to remove.

Which headlights will NOT come out crystal clear?

Many headlights over time of no protection will have what’s called spider cracking. Tiny cracks that are sometimes on the inside of the lens and sometimes in the middle. I can only restore what’s on the outside of the lens. Some manufacturers like Toyota and Lexus have a softer lens that actually has more oils in the polycarbonate. Over time the sun burns through the lens creating a very cloudy lens. I’m still able to get rid of the yellow oxidation and make the lens clearer and put a protection on but the lens will never be crystal clear.
